PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say an off-duty officer shot and killed a robbery suspect in north Philadelphia.

Homicide detectives confirmed that the suspect was killed in the shooting in the Olney neighborhood which happened at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials said the officer intervened as the suspect was robbing another man, and fired when the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at him.

The suspect ran off but collapsed nearby. He was transported to Einstein Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Police said a weapon was recovered.

Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or the officer, who was uninjured.
