ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina say an Asheville man involved in a standoff with police officers has died.

Asheville police tell news outlets that 55-year-old Mark Allen Meyer was not in police custody when he died Tuesday morning - a day after he opened fired on officers and barricaded himself inside a home.

Authorities were at the home responding to a domestic disturbance report.

Police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse says Meyer later surrendered to officers. No one was injured.

News outlets report that warrants show Meyer then told police that he had ingested a large amount of medication. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Police say they had obtained warrants against Meyer on several charges including assault with a deadly weapon against a government official with a firearm.

The investigation is ongoing.
