MADRID (AP) - Villarreal striker Roberto Soldado is facing a long layoff after tearing ligaments in his right knee.

The Spanish club said Wednesday he will undergo surgery.

The 31-year-old Soldado was injured while playing in a preseason friendly against Deportivo La Coruna on Tuesday.

Soldado, a former Tottenham and Valencia player, helped Villarreal earn a spot in a Champions League playoff against Monaco set to start next week after finishing fourth in the Spanish league last season.
