NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island woman is facing charges after police say her 19-year-old friend died from a suspected heroin overdose in the woman’s apartment.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1SBeIbn ) 21-year-old Khadijah Cooper was arrested following the July 15 death of the Middletown woman. Police announced the arrest Tuesday.

The Newport woman is charged with failing to provide assistance and obstructing police. She pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges Thursday and was released on personal recognizance.

Detectives say Cooper acknowledged calling a drug dealer to get drugs for her friend. Investigators say a text message on Cooper’s phone indicates her friend wouldn’t wake up and that Cooper went to bed without calling 911.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 17.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Cooper.
