BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A 19-year-old boy has been charged in the slaying of his mother whose charred remains were found in an abandoned Birmingham apartment.

According to AL.com (https://bit.ly/2aL4qV3) Birmingham police announced Wednesday that Jonathan Pitts is charged in the murder of 41-year-old Cheryl Harrell. Police say Harrell’s body was burned beyond recognition.

Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says that Harrell’s boyfriend called police Sunday to an apartment on Sunhill Road to file a missing person’s report. Police say that while the report was being filed, the boyfriend began looking for Harrell and found the charred remains inside the apartment.

Edwards said he does not know what led to the slaying.

Pitts his being held in Jefferson County Jail on $150,000 bond. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.
