Vice President Joseph R. Biden officiated a same-sex ceremony for two male White House staffers at the vice president’s residence in Washington on Monday afternoon.

Mr. Biden obtained temporary certification from the District to perform the ceremony for Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie who asked him to officiate.
The vice president later tweeted out a photograph of the ceremony.

“Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys,” Mr. Biden wrote. It was the first time he officiated at a wedding.

Mr. Mosteller is the director of Oval Office operations and a special assistant to President Obama. Mr. Mahshie works for the office of first lady Michelle Obama.

The vice president’s wife, Jill Biden, said of the event on Twitter, “Love is love!”
