NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - The new president at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven is heading to work.

Joe Bertolino is set to become the university’s 12th president on Monday. His annual salary will be about $295,000.

Bertolino previously was president of Lyndon State College in Vermont and a special assistant to the chancellor for system integration and related efforts at Vermont State Colleges.

He replaces Mary Papazian, who resigned effective July 1 to become president of San Jose State University in California.

Bertolino says he was drawn to Southern because of its emphasis on academic excellence and social justice.
