NEW YORK (AP) - A former New York City high school basketball star has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting a rival opponent who was also his onetime roommate.
Davontay Grace, of Brooklyn, was sentenced Monday.
A jury convicted him in August of weapons and assault charges in the 2015 shooting of Dexter Hopkins. He was acquitted of an attempted murder charge.
Prosecutors say the two had played against one another at rival Brooklyn high schools and had been roommates at a Georgia prep school.
Both men are now 24 years old.
Prosecutors say Grace shot Hopkins six times in a Brooklyn courtyard in broad daylight on Jan. 23, 2015. It’s not clear what prompted the violence.
Hopkins underwent multiple surgeries for injuries to his lung and leg.
