NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency is holding a workshop to help New Orleans residents understand the new Flood Insurance Rate Maps, which will lower flood insurance premiums for many homeowners.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/2bQRjqe ) reports that FEMA will hold the workshop on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the New Orleans City Council Chambers.

A news release from Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s office says more than 53 percent of New Orleans properties were removed from Special Flood Hazard Areas because of flood protection and drainage improvements.

The mayor’s office says the new rate maps will affect about 85,000 policies in New Orleans.

The workshop will cover flood insurance changes, policy conversions and other resources.
