SAN DIEGO (AP) - A San Diego police officer who was badly wounded in a shooting that killed his partner is out of the hospital.

A police spokesman says Wade Irwin was released Saturday night and is recovering at home.

The 32-year-old gang unit officer was shot in the throat on July 28 as he got out of a patrol car to ask a man if he lived in the area.

Police say the gunman then went to the open passenger door and fired into the car. Forty-three-year-old Jonathan De Guzman was hit five times as he sat in the driver’s seat.

Irwin managed to wound the gunman.

Fifty-two-year-old Jesse Gomez has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder.
