JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Two candidates will compete in a Sept. 13 runoff to fill a vacant seat in the Mississippi House.
Debra Gibbs and Synarus Green advanced from a field of four candidates in Tuesday’s special election in parts of Hinds and Madison counties. The winner will fill more than three years of a four-year term.
Democratic Rep. Kimberly Campbell of Jackson had served in District 72 since 2008. She stepped down in May to become state director of AARP.
Special-election candidates run without party labels, but Gibbs and Green are Democrats.
Unofficial results show Gibbs, an attorney, had 701 votes and Green, policy director for the city of Jackson, had 696.
Theresa G. Kennedy, a businesswoman, had 200 votes and A. Shae Buchanon-Williams, a Marine Corps veteran, had 158.
