SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Scottsdale has abandoned a proposed ordinance that would have banned discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.

The Arizona Republic reports (https://bit.ly/2bPsiK4 ) that efforts to pass the non-discrimination laws were stalled over possible exemptions. Similar ordinances in Mesa and Glendale have also stalled, though Phoenix, Tempe, Tucson and Flagstaff have all passed LGBT non-discrimination laws.

The Scottsdale ordinance came to a head over an exemption for businesses with fewer than 16 employees. About 86 percent of Scottsdale businesses would have qualified for the exemption.

Federal law prohibits discrimination based on race, age, sex, religion, disability and a handful of other factors, but sexual orientation and gender identity remain unprotected classes.
