FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A prosecutor says a Fort Wayne police officer was acting in self-defense when he shot a teenager in the back.

Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards said Thursday that the discovery of a gun in the area of the June 21 shooting shows Officer Robert Hollo was justified in shooting the youth and Hollo won’t face charges. She says witnesses and in-car video also corroborated Hollo’s statements.

Authorities said Hollo was investigating shootings involving teenagers when three teens approached his unmarked car. They fled when Hollo told them he was a police officer. Hollo chased them and said he shot one in the back after he saw a gun. The teen was seriously injured.

The teen’s mother has filed a federal lawsuit against Hollo alleging he used excessive force.
