PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - National Grid officials say more than 5,300 customers in the Providence area were without power following an outage that cut the lights at the State House.

Preliminary investigations found that the failure of an underground cable is to blame for the widespread power outage, which was first reported around 8 p.m. Thursday.

A majority of the outages were reported on the city’s east side. Lt. Richard Fernandes says lights were out as far west as the Mount Pleasant neighborhood.

Four people briefly trapped in an elevator at the Providence Place Mall required rescue by Providence firefighters. A generator at the mall was not working.

Miriam Hospital also lost power but was backed up by a generator.

National Grid says almost all power was restored to the city by 10:15 p.m.
