CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - A judge has added 30 years to the sentence of a state prison inmate who beat his cellmate to death.

Thirty-eight-year old Darnell Thompson was sentenced Tuesday in Cumberland for killing Jason Wallace at Western Correctional Institution in 2013. A jury convicted Thompson of second-degree murder in May.

The sentence will run consecutive to Thompson’s life sentence for a 1995 murder conviction in Prince George’s County.

Twenty-nine-year-old Wallace was found unconscious in a pool of blood from skull fractures in their cell at the maximum-security prison. He was serving a 32-year sentence for armed robbery and drug convictions in Harford County.

Thompson was found mentally incompetent to stand trial in 2015 but was found competent last March after another examination. He represented himself at his trial in May.
