SMITHERS, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities say a Smithers man killed his wife after hitting her with what appeared to be the handle of a shovel during an argument.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that 42-year-old Andrew W. Proctor is charged with murder in the death of 42-year-old Crystal Proctor.

Paramedics say they found the woman unresponsive in a home Sunday evening. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Authorities say Crystal Proctor had a preexisting medical condition that could kill her with a sharp blow to the stomach.

Deputies say Andrew Proctor fled on foot following the incident. Investigators found him in an apartment in Montgomery and took him into custody. He denied hitting his wife, saying she and her son attacked him.
