ESSEX, Vt. (AP) - Authorities have upgraded charges against a man in a multi-vehicle crash that killed a Burlington woman.

The Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed amended charges of driving under the influence of alcohol with death resulting and gross negligent driving against 41-year-old David LeMire of Essex. He pleaded not guilty to the new charges last week.

LeMire was initially charged with drunken driving in the crash that killed 24-year-old Crystal Santana.

Police say LeMire was driving an ATV on state Route 128 in May when he attempted to turn left, causing two of three motorcycles to crash. Santana was a passenger on one of the motorcycles. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Court papers say LeMire had a blood-alcohol content of .231. The state’s legal limit is .08.
