PRENTISS, Miss. (AP) - A man suspected in the death of his 4-year-old son has been identified and made his initial court appearance Monday.

WDAM-TV (https://bit.ly/2b9cIKL ) reports Belton Sims was charged with the murder of his son, Messiah Griffith. Sims’ age and hometown were not immediately available.

According to Jefferson Davis County Sheriff Ron Strickland, Sims picked up his son from the child’s mother’s house and took him back to his home on Friday. There, Sims allegedly assaulted Griffith, giving the boy multiple bruises. Sims then took the child to the Jefferson Davis Community hospital, where Griffith was pronounced dead.

Strickland didn’t provide details on what sparked the alleged assault.

Sims was given no bond during his initial appearance. It was unknown if he’s represented by an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
