CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - An elementary school in Cranston will close for a day because dozens of children are sick, possibly with the gastrointestinal illness norovirus.

Cranston Superintendent Jeannine Nota-Masse decided to close Gladstone Elementary School on Friday after 160 students were absent and 50 went home sick on Thursday.

Nota-Masse said in a letter to parents and staff that the state Department of Health was consulted and believe the cause to be a virus.

She says the department didn’t mandate the school’s closure for the day, but she thought it prudent to do so to thoroughly disinfect the building.

School buses and food service areas will also be cleaned.

More than 500 students attend the elementary school.
