SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - After nearly 50 years in the public safety field, an ex-Saginaw County sheriff is going off-duty for good.

The Saginaw News (https://bit.ly/2h94r8A ) reports Tom McIntyre, who was sheriff from 1993 to 1998, will retire from his current position as director of Saginaw County 911 where he has worked for the past 18 years. Before that, McIntyre, 67, worked 26 years at the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department.

Before he was elected sheriff at the department, McIntyre started in the juvenile division, became a sergeant in charge of the marine division, was jail administrator and was in charge of the road patrol.

McIntyre was an aspiring teacher when the law enforcement bug bit him.

“I drove the bus for St. Charles Public Schools for one semester once I turned 21,” McIntyre said. “I was going to be a teacher. I did student teaching in Chesaning.”

McIntyre credits the villages of Chesaning and St. Charles for his long career in public safety.

“It takes a village to raise a child and those villages of St. Charles and Chesaning took me under their wing and I just got involved,” he said. “When I came out of college, the village of Chesaning offered me a full-time police job. They made me a school liaison officer.”

McIntyre’s retirement is effective Dec. 31. A retirement party is being held for him from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 1 at the American Legion Post, 5190 Weiss St. in Saginaw Township.

Saginaw County Sheriff’s Lt. Randy Pfau will replace McIntyre.

“I think he’ll do a good job,” McIntyre said. “I feel very good about the handoff.”

McIntyre said that he was grateful to have been able to serve Saginaw County for so many years.

“I consider myself the luckiest person on the face of the earth,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate. I still hope in some ways after I retire that I can still be involved in community service.”
