BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - A 57-year-old man from the southern Vermont town of Wardsboro has been charged with murder in the October shooting death of his neighbor. But Kevin Parker’s defense lawyer says it was a case of self-defense.

Parker denied the murder charge as well as a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter in the criminal division of Vermont Superior Court for Windham County in Brattleboro on Monday.

He was charged with fatally shooting 42-year-old Kirby Staib after an argument. Staib was found dead outside his home on Gilfeather Road in Wardsboro on October 18.

Television station WCAX reports (https://bit.ly/2hGzbhM) that Chris Montgomery, Parker’s lawyer, is calling it an act of self-defense and says his client is innocent. Parker told police Staib shot at him first.
