CHELSEA, Mass. (AP) - An Everett man who prosecutors say fled the country after hitting and killing a man with his car earlier this year has been ordered held on $150,000 bail.

Jose Daniel Arevalo pleaded not guilty to charges of motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal collision at his arraignment Monday in Chelsea District Court.

Suffolk County prosecutors allege the 34-year-old Arevalo hit 25-year-old Marco Salguero-Cruz with his car on June 4 in Chelsea. Salguero-Cruz died at a Boston hospital.

Prosecutors say Arevalo fled to his native El Salvador two days after the crash but returned to the U.S. last month. They say he was found in Texas, arrested Dec. 2, and brought back to Massachusetts on Saturday.

He’s due back in court on Jan. 5.
