WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Jake Alexander ran for 135 yards to help Belmont South Point beat Rocky Mount 16-7 for the Class 3-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship on Saturday.
Alexander was named the game’s most valuable player for the Red Raiders (12-4), who won their first state championship since 2009. South Point trailed 7-3 at half but went ahead for good on Scottie Lee’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Ray Grier with 4:39 left in the third quarter of a rematch of last year’s 3-A final.
Thomas Lempereur kicked three field goals, including a 25-yarder with 3:06 left in the game to make it a two-possession lead for South Point.
It was a rough offensive day for the reigning champion Gryphons (13-3). Rocky Mount had run for nearly 4,000 yards this season, but Saturday they ran 30 times for 27 yards and finished with 118 total yards with two turnovers.
