ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A man convicted of murder and other charges in a deadly street shooting has been sentenced to 43 years in state prison.
Union County prosecutors say Jonathan James approached a group of people in Elizabeth in March 2012 and opened fire with a handgun. They say 39-year-old city Orlando Hernandez was fatally shot in the head, while another victim was struck in the back and the arm.
Two Elizabeth police officers who happened to be on patrol in the area heard the shots and soon apprehended Jones with help from other officers.
A motive hasn’t been disclosed.
The 23-year-old Hillside man was convicted in March on murder, attempted murder and weapons charges. He’ll have to serve nearly 37 years of the term imposed Friday before he becomes eligible for parole.
