ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 12 to 25 years in the stabbing death of his mother at their mobile home near Erie International Airport in northwestern Pennsylvania.
Twenty-one-year-old Michael Burrows was sentenced Friday on a guilty but mentally ill plea to third-degree murder in the March 2014 death of 54-year-old Mary Burrows.
Burrows told police he remembered getting a knife from a kitchen drawer and arguing with his mother about his drinking but couldn’t remember everything that happened.
The judge cited what he called mental health “deficits” but also said Burrows knew that the killing was wrong.
Burrows apologized, calling the death a “tragedy.” Defense attorney Gene Placidi was reported to have an IQ of 65 and received only limited treatment, but had expressed remorse and “loved his mother.”
