ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A proposal headed to the Albuquerque City Council aims to keep the city’s number of untested sexual-assault evidence kits from growing.
The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2hLzh8T) that a proposal by Councilor Pat Davis outlines a series of deadlines that would require Albuquerque police to send new kits to the lab and have them tested in criminal cases.
Davis says he wants to prioritize cases so victims don’t have to wait.
The council’s finance and government committee is expected to consider the proposal sometime next month.
New Mexico leads the nation when it comes to the number of untested kits per capita, far outpacing the rest of the states.
