LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man accused of killing a 20-year-old he took in from a homeless shelter and identified as his son told Las Vegas police he didn’t remember a shooting and wasn’t sure if the two were really related.

Police say Michael Gardenhire said he and the slain man, Joshua Deshawn Lee, argued frequently during the five or six days Lee stayed at Gardenhire’s apartment southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.

Police say officers in the complex on another matter heard gunshots late Tuesday and were approached by the 49-year-old Gardenhire.

A police report says Gardenhire led the officers to his apartment, where they found Lee fatally shot in the chest and a handgun in a box in a closet.

Gardenhire was jailed pending an initial court appearance when he’s expected to be appointed a lawyer.
