CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Charleston city councilman and real estate agent has died.

Media outlets report that 79-year-old Archie Chestnut died Sunday after a months-long battle with liver cancer. He was a Democrat who represented Ward 7 of Charleston.

Chestnut’s term started in June 2015. He had previously served a term from 2003 to 2007.

Chestnut was also a co-owner of Chestnut Properties, a realty company in the Kanawha Valley.

Mayor Danny Jones tells the Charleston Gazette-Mail (https://bit.ly/2hOWZkQ) that he plans on recommending Chestnut’s wife, Rutha Chestnut, to fill the vacant seat on City Council. Any recommendation by the mayor must be approved by the council.
