According to a Marist Poll released Tuesday, 5 percent of Americans think Leicester City’s first Premier League victory was the top sports story of the year.
The Premier League, according to Wikipedia, is “a professional league for men’s association football” (commonly referred to as “soccer” in the United States).
Leicester City, a member of the England-based league, won the group’s championship in May.
According to sampling information released with the Marist Poll, the survey results are based on calls to randomly selected cell phones and landlines throughout the United States over the first nine days of December.
Most respondents, 56 percent, thought the Chicago Cubs’ first World Series win since 1908 to be the best single sports accomplishment of 2016.
Another 20 percent went with the U.S. women’s gymnastics team winning consecutive Olympic team gold medals.
Eight percent mentioned the Cleveland Cavaliers bringing home the NBA title to give the city its first major championship since 1964, and 7 percent cited the Denver Broncos winning the Super Bowl in Peyton Manning’s final NFL game.
