EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A math teacher at U-32 Middle and High School in East Montpelier has been chosen as the 2017 Vermont teacher of the year.

Katherine McCann was honored at a ceremony at the school on Tuesday.

The Vermont Agency of Education says besides teaching advanced placement statistics, geometry and algebra, McCann is a national board certified teacher and presidential award winner for excellence in teaching math and science. She’s also co-president of the Vermont Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

She says teaching is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.

As the teacher of the year, McCann is the state’s candidate for the national teacher of the year award. She also will travel to Washington this spring for a reception at the White House.
