CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A 16-year-old has been charged as an adult in a deadly Cape Girardeau shooting.

The Southeast Missourian (https://bit.ly/2h9R2Nm ) reports that Mortez Zanell Cleaves was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Willie Brown Jr. The Cape Girardeau teen was certified to stand trial as an adult Tuesday. Bond is set at $500,000. No attorney is listed for Cleaves in online court records.

Brown died in September after he was shot six times.

Court records say 23-year-old Tyyeema Cleaves told authorities that her cousin, Mortez Cleaves, planned to rob Brown after she finished purchasing the anti-anxiety medication Xanax from him. Tyyeema Cleaves said she heard shots while walking home and that Mortez Cleaves told her he had messed up “really bad.”

Tyyeema Cleaves is charged with second-degree murder.
