GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - A man who shot and killed a woman in Gadsden has died from wounds suffered in a shootout with police.

Gadsden Police, in a news release, said it happened about 1 a.m. Saturday after police responded to a call of “a man with a gun who had just shot a woman.”

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter fled, but witnesses provided police with a description and within moments, two officers found him nearby. Police say the man ran again and after a short foot chase, he produced a handgun. Shots were fired and the man was wounded. He died at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Police have not released the name of the woman or the suspect pending notification of their families.
