NEW CASTLE, Colo. (AP) - A body recovered from the Colorado River on Christmas Eve is believed to be that of a suspect in a pickup theft who fled after a crash on Interstate 70 and was tracked to the riverbank.

Garfield County authorities say the body was spotted at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the river west of New Castle and recovered about two hours later.

Officers said they believe the body was that of a suspect in the Dec. 19 theft of a Honda pickup from a residence east of New Castle. The pickup was found crashed into a fence off Interstate 70.

The next day, search dogs led deputies to an area where they found the suspect’s wallet, clothing and later a bloody knife.

The Garfield County coroner was withholding the person’s name until family members were notified.
