LAS VEGAS (AP) - Hikers and fossil fans are on a path toward a first walking trail at the newest national monument in southern Nevada.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2h6YrNm ) that city officials in North Las Vegas approved a plan last week to build a nearly 2-mile long path near the future site of a sprawling master-planned community slated for development near Tule (TOO’-lee) Springs Fossil Beds National Monument.

City officials say housing developer KBS Capital Advisors will spend $5 million building roads and trailhead parking that will then be maintained by the city.

The National Park Service operates the 35-square-mile monument, which was designated two years ago.

It is providing easements to let visitors cross onto the trail while the city lays utility lines.

It’s not immediately clear when work will begin.
