HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) - Holyoke officials have approved borrowing more than $1 million to replace a public pool that closed in 2015.

The City Council last week unanimously approved the borrowing to rebuild the Roland Pouliot Pool.

Demolition of the old pool and construction of a new facility are expected to cost about $1.5 million, but the city has received a $400,000 state grant to help defray costs.

City Council President Kevin Jourdain, a former lifeguard at the pool, tells Masslive.com that he is “thrilled.”

The pool opened in 1981 but closed in 2015 because of cracks that resulted in excessive water loss.

The new facility is expected to open in 2018. It will include a lap pool and splash pad, and it will be fully accessible to the disabled.
