HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County authorities are asking for help solving a nearly 40-year old cold case of a man found dead in his truck.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reports Tuesday (https://bit.ly/2izUoOB ) the sheriff’s office is offering $2,500 for information leading to an arrest in the death of James Homer Aldridge.

Someone shot Aldridge multiple times from the passenger side of his pickup before it hit a tree off Highway 170 in Bluffton. A bread deliveryman found Aldridge about 2 a.m. Feb. 25, 1977.

Investigators say Aldridge traveled frequently from Beaufort to Jacksonville, Florida, and might have picked up hitchhikers along the way.

The Navy and Air Force veteran was taking a certification course in Florida for his work as a civilian electronics technician at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.
