BRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) - A man who fatally shot another man during a fight stemming from a child custody dispute is now headed to state prison.
Cumberland County prosecutors say Errick Young recently received a 22-year sentence. The 23-year-old Millville man had pleaded guilty in October to an aggravated manslaughter charge stemming from the March 2014 shooting of 29-year-old Benjamin Broughton.
Authorities have said the men were fighting over a child custody issue when Young shot Broughton in the face at the victim’s Commercial Township home. Young fled the scene but was captured a few weeks later.
Young initially was charged with murder, aggravated assault and two weapons counts. He will have to serve nearly 19 years before he becomes eligible for parole.
