ONEIDA, N.Y. (AP) - Police are investigating a killing that happened during a robbery nearly six decades ago in central New York.
Sixty-three-year-old Ernest Chaney was killed in 1958 while working as a gas station attendant in the Town of Eaton. An investigation found Chaney had gone outside to attend to a customer at about 1 a.m. and was adding oil to the engine of a car when he was struck nine times in the back of the head with a blunt object.
Chaney was discovered by a customer inside the station. He never regained consciousness and died 10 days later in a Syracuse hospital. His wallet contained about $80 and was stolen. But there were no indications anything else was missing.
No weapon was located.

This story has been corrected to show the killing happened in 1958, not 1968, and the name of the town is Town of Eaton, not Town on Eaton.
