MONROE, Maine (AP) - A fire official in Waldo County waded into ice cold water to recover mail that had been stolen and dumped over the side of a bridge in Monroe.

WCSH-TV reports (https://on.wcsh6.com/2hwQQej ) the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department posted found the mail Wednesday sitting on top of the ice that was surrounded by open water. Monroe Fire Chief Kenneth Clements jumped into the water to retrieve the three full bags of mail.

Police have arrested 19-year-old Randy Elwell of Swanville and a juvenile in connection with the mail theft. It wasn’t immediately known if they’re represented by an attorney.



The sheriff’s office has posted photos of the mail retrieval to its Facebook page.
