CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Republican-Gov. elect Chris Sununu is backing a former rival in the race to lead the New Hampshire Republican Party.

Sununu is supporting outgoing state Sen. Jeanie Forrester to become party chair. She unsuccessfully challenged him in the GOP gubernatorial primary. Chairwoman Jennifer Horn is stepping down after four years leading the party. Forrester is the only candidate in the race so far, but a movement is underway to draft party Vice Chairman Matt Mayberry. He couldn’t be reached for comment Saturday.

The chairman presides over meetings, hires and fires staffers, approves the party’s budget and promotes a legislative agenda that fits with the party platform.

Forrester says she’ll focus on raising money, expanding town and city GOP committees and work with State House leaders to enact a strong Republican agenda.
