DENVER (AP) - Gov. John Hickenlooper has appointed a suburban Denver judge to serve on the Colorado Court of Appeals.

He announced Friday that Craig Welling would fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Gale Miller.

Welling currently serves as a judge in the 17th Judicial District, which covers Adams and Broomfield counties. Before that, he served as chief counsel to former Gov. Bill Ritter.

He will start his new position on Jan. 16.
