NEW YORK (AP) - Seven olive oil retailers based in New York have been sued by a trade group for allegedly claiming that their product is superior to other olive oils.

WNBC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2ioOhfS ) the North American Olive Oil Association filed a lawsuit seeking damages and an injunction against the defendants in New York’s Eastern District Court on Dec. 19.

The NAOOA alleges that the retailers conspired with California distributor Veronica Foods to spread “false and misleading statements” regarding the quality and health benefits of olive oil.

The trade group represents a collection of marketers, packagers and importers of olive oil. The NAOOA has also similarly sued celebrity TV physician Dr. Oz for “false olive oil attacks.”

Veronica Foods says the company “stands by the truth and accuracy of all of the statements.”
