TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Hundreds are expected to wring in the New Year on the Georgia coast after a chilly dip in the ocean off Tybee Island.
Georgia’s largest public beach hosts the annual Tybee Polar Plunge on Sunday. The Savannah Morning News reports (https://bit.ly/2icISrC ) organizers hope to surpass the event’s record crowd of more than 2,000 swimmers in 2012.
Every year tourists and locals swarm Tybee Island’s beach in crazy costumes and charge into the ocean at noon. The term “polar” is a bit of a stretch. The forecast calls for temperatures on Tybee Island to reach 66 degrees on New Year’s Day.
The plunge is sponsored by the historic Tybee Post Theater, which lost its roof to Hurricane Matthew in October. The $25 entry fees will help pay for repairs.
