NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A shooting has claimed the life of a 10-month-old boy and left a man wounded in the New Orleans area.

“The only information our homicide investigators have been able to determine at this point was that both victims were actually inside of the home along with the child’s father and three young adults as well when someone opened the door and began firing inside the home,” Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, told reporters at the scene.

Deputies found the 10-month-old boy, Xyahir Davis, and a man thought to in his late teens or early 20s with multiple gunshot wounds, Fortunato said.

The child was pronounced dead at West Jefferson Medical Center, he said.

The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was undergoing surgery at University Medical Center and was in serious condition.

“We have no information on the suspects,” Fortunato said at the scene.

He said authorities are asking anyone with information on the suspect or suspects to contact the sheriff’s homicide division or Crime Stoppers.
