BOSTON (AP) - Top political figures in Massachusetts and Quebec are hoping to strengthen ties between the two regions.

Democratic Massachusetts Senate President Stan Rosenberg and Quebec National Assembly President Jacques Chagnon are meeting at the Massachusetts Statehouse on Monday to announce members of the Massachusetts-Quebec Research Council.

The new council stems from a meeting of the Massachusetts-Quebec Cooperation Conference in Montreal in August where participants discussed a range of topics, from public transit and energy issues to higher education and the possibility of direct flights between Quebec City and Boston.

Members also agreed to create the Massachusetts-Quebec Research Council. That group is made up of private and public sector officials from both regions. They’re looking at ways to move forward on bolstering education and business connections between the regions.
