WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - Ernie Merrick has resigned as coach of the Wellington Phoenix in Australian football’s A-League.

Merrick, who won the A-League title twice with the Melbourne Victory, announced his decision Monday, a day after a 2-0 loss to Adelaide dropped Wellington to the bottom of the league.

Wellington has had six losses and two wins so far this season. In four seasons under Merrick, it has twice finished ninth in the 10-team competition.

Merrick, who was born in Scotland, said he informed players of his decision on Sunday.

“I feel that I have not performed well enough as head coach, as we have a very strong squad that should be higher up the table,” Merrick said.
