NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Essex County prosecutors say authorities have charged a 50-year-old New Jersey prison inmate in the fatal beating of his cellmate last month.

NJ.com reports (https://bit.ly/2gXESbw ) Geraldo Ramirez was charged last week with murder in connection with the Nov. 6 beating death of 71-year-old Gary Holliday at Northern State Prison in Newark.

Holliday was found unresponsive in the cell he shared with Ramirez, who was also present upon the discovery. The official cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Ramirez is being held on $1 million bail. It’s not known if he has a lawyer.

Holliday had been behind bars since 2005 in connection with a Burlington County aggravated assault. Ramirez was serving a 10-year sentence for a robbery in Cumberland County.
