CHICAGO (AP) - A Cook County judge has ruled a jury will hear evidence in the juvenile court case against a girl accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old and wounding a second girl.
Assistant State’s Attorney Athena Farmakis objected to the defense request for a jury trial for the girl accused in the 2014 death of Endia Martin. She contended even if convicted, the alleged shooter, who was 14 at the time, would be eligible for parole after serving five years.
Another judge ruled in October the shooting suspect, who isn’t being named because of her age, shouldn’t be tried as adult.
The shooting of Martin occurred as the accused girl and another girl were fighting.
The defendant’s uncle, Donnell Flora, was found guilty of murder for providing the gun used in the shooting.
