OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A 19-year-old Omaha woman has been sentenced to probation for posting a photo of a girl who had been assaulted by her brother and his friend.
The Omaha World-Herald (https://bit.ly/1oswhjK ) reports that Judge Greg Schatz sentenced Jalyia Templeman on Tuesday to two years of probation.
Templeman had faced up to 20 months in prison after pleading no contest to recording a juvenile in a state of undress. During the sentencing, Schatz cited Templeman’s lack of record, remorse and young age.
“I’m truly sorry to the victim,” Jalyia told the judge Tuesday. “I’ve been cooperative with the prosecutor and the court system. I’m sorry for the part I took. … Sorry for everything.”
Templeman told Schatz that she didn’t know her brother, Javohn Templeman, and his friend, Nicholas Bregg, had repeatedly raped the 16-year-old girl. Javohn Templeman and Bregg have been convicted in the case.
Javohn Templeman and Bregg had met the victim at a South Omaha party. She fell unconscious, and the men carted her to a friend’s house, where they took turns raping her. They later took her to Javohn Templeman’s house, where he had sex with her.
After Jalyia Templeman found the girl naked from the waist down in a bed at her home, she snapped a photo of her and posted it on Instagram.
“My client had no knowledge of the offenses or acts committed by (Javohn Templeman and Bregg),” said Molly Blazek, Jalyia Templeman’s attorney. “The only connection is a common victim.”
Schatz noted that as brutal as the photo was, it may have been helpful to police. A detective found Javohn Templeman and Bregg after linking the picture to Jalyia Templeman’s Instagram account.
