PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a man has been arrested in the apparently accidental shooting of a 12-year-old boy believed to be the man’s nephew.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard says 29-year-old Robert Chavez was arrested Monday in the shooting of the boy late Sunday.

According to Howard, investigators determined that Chavez was showing the boy a gun when it discharged and wounded the boy.



The boy was hospitalized in critical condition but Howard says his prognosis is improving.

Howard says Chavez is prohibited from possessing a firearm and that he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and of misconduct Involving weapons.

Chavez remains jailed and it’s not immediately known whether he has an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
